Thanks for the answer.

sed complained about it's usage, but this line works:

PID=`echo $PID | sed 's/[^0-9]//g'`

But now I wonder why the pidfile contains a "-" in the first place?

# cat /var/run/clamav/clamav-milter.pid
-16460

I checked 2 other boxes:

1) running etch

# uname -a
Linux test01 2.6.18-4-xen-amd64 #1 SMP Mon Mar 26 12:24:02 CEST 2007 x86_64
GNU/Linux

ii  clamav-milter                           0.90.1-2
    antivirus scanner for sendmail
ii  dpkg                                    1.13.25
    package maintenance system for Debian
ii  lsb-base                                3.1-23.1
    Linux Standard Base 3.1 init script functionality

# cat /var/run/clamav/clamav-milter.pid
-8216

2) running sarge

# uname -a
Linux maximus 2.6.17.6 #1 Wed Jul 19 17:32:12 CEST 2006 i686 GNU/Linux

ii  clamav-milter                           0.90.2-0volatile1
    antivirus scanner for sendmail
ii  dpkg                                    1.10.28
    Package maintenance system for Debian
ii  lsb-base                                3.1-10
    Linux Standard Base 3.1 init script functionality

# cat /var/run/clamav/clamav-milter.pid
-15056

And I checked the other pid-files on these boxes, they only contain positive
integers.
