You can follow progress here, http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=330846 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=170661 For the first problem, with icon scaling, you could try gnome-panel 2.18 and see if it improve things.
