There are two tracks to Nvidia's legacy driver package - the 71xx series only supports cards through the geforce 2, and the 96xx series supports the geforce 2MX and later (until you get to the cards supported by the current 97xx series). Nvidia's explanation can be seen at <http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html>. So my geforce 4mx 4000 card isn't supported by the current 71xx-based nvidia-kernel-legacy package, and also isn't supported by the standard nvidia-kernel package.
