I don't think the power plugin should do anything with the screen saver.
The idea is to inhibit gnome-power-manager on play (to stop it from
going to sleep) and uninhibit on pause.

Are you sure you simply haven't set g-p-m to put the display on standby
after a while?

What version of gnome-power-manager are you running?
