When /proc/$PID/cmdlin gives me "/usr/bin/X11/X", I was experimenting
a few things, starting X by "startx". Per your question, I have also
tried xdm, which I usually run. Then /proc/$PID/cmdlin carries

  /usr/X11R6/bin/Xvt7-auth/var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles/A:0-sbZSSv

In this case, wttyhx behaves as it is supposed to. (I now see why
nobody else complained before.)

When starting X with "startx", its output is empty. If I start X with
xdm, it says:

  /usr/bin/Xorg
