Empty variable name "$" is a syntax error, and AFAIK upstream doesn't intend to change that, _however_, it should really fail more gracefuly instead of infin loop :-) I'll forward this information to upstream. Wrt support for booting the Hurd, grub2 1.95+20070505-1 includes my update-grub rewrite, which should produce a usable stanza to boot GNU Mach and the required Hurd modules.
