I've compiled the 1.0.12-4 package from testing on stable. Version 1.0.12-4 already contains the patch you suggested (debian/patches/03*).
But it doesn't seem to solve the problem: after 30 seconds of CPU time it's memory usage has gone from 0.5% to 0.9% ...
