I think that strace prevented splashy to go to the background. Also
know that splashy uses several threads, so I think you need at least
'-f' too.

Maybe... from your previous messages it seems that splashy didn't stop
and in the end exited because of the timeout we implemented. The
problem is most probably solved at the same time as #410438.
