according mozilla.org help/howto/support, to make IW/FF handle the mailto: url over to an external app, you need to set network.protocol-handler.app.mailto string in about:config, but that doesn't seem to work, eg I tried /usr/bin/thunderbird %si and /usr/bin/xterm -e mutt %s. Setting to true network.protocol-handler.warn-external.mailto it does show the app name I set, but then it doesn't exec it (strace -f -e execve doesn't show any call).
