Are you really really sure Eclipse is the reason for your crashing.
Reasonably sure. I've been using this exact VNC+gdm setup for many months and I usually leave my VNC sessions open for days. Eclipse is the only thing new. In my other e-mail (sent to -quiet) I describe a minimalist sequence of actions that make the crash reproducible here. If Eclipse isn't the reason it's a damned effective catalyst.
have used Eclipse over VNC several times in near past and it never crashed VNC.
