Yes, we know that bash's built-in echo does not conform to POSIX.

echo "$x"


That echo will *not* be the echo from coreutils.

Yes, I know that bash scripts echo with a builtin. That's why the subject line said "/bin/echo". I should have been more precise, and also put the "/bin/" in the body of the report.

Still, if the program exists, it ought to be correct
in one sense or another.    It should either be
sensible and safe (i.e. accept "--") or POSIX (i.e. accept nothing).
