I have a directory where I put local fonts (not obtained from Debian packages). I build a hints file and use defoma-font to register them. When I upgraded fontconfig from 2.2.3-4 to 2.3.1-2, these fonts were no longer available in some applications (e.g. gvim, gnome-terminal, gaim), but were still available in others (e.g. xlsfonts, oowriter). I tracked this down to the removal of /etc/fonts/local.conf, which had not been locally modified (i.e. was the version of the file provided by fontconfig 2.2.3-4). This file has the <include> for /var/lib/defoma/.... Since local.conf is supposed to be entirely for the use of the local admin, I think removal of this file from the package was appropriate, but the defoma stanza should be moved to a different file, as this should be a standard part of the configuration. Or, perhaps defoma should put its own file in /etc/fonts/conf.d/. I found these other bugs that may or may not be related to this problem: 215610, 299250, 299697, 298803.
