Indeed, .purple/accels contained exactly one non-comment line:
(gtk_accel_path "<PurpleMain>/Tools/Mute Sounds" "<Super>c")

Removing that definitly fixed the original issue.

Since I'm sure I didn't add it manually to the file, some part of 
pidgin/purple seems to have problems reading its own output.
