What I was saying in that mail was that if you install slim, xdm, gdm, kdm, ... you don't want that each one tries to start at boot. Indeed all of them have their corresponding init.d scripts, therefore the deconf value helps to start the default login manager which you can select with a `dpkg-reconfigure $yourloginmanager'.
