The patch attached to #237984 includes patch which may fix i(or provide ways to do workaround) for kernel 2.6 issues. This needs to be verified with much newer patched gpm not in Debian. At least documentation in recent version makes this not an important issue for release. At least initial reports were kernel issues anyway.
