The fact that setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH to /usr/lib/iceweasel made the problem go away, and that the problem stayed away without setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH after purging libnss3. However, I can't repeat it on another machine by installing libnss3 so something else must be off too. I'll investigate further when I get back to work (and the machine that was broken) and see if I can figure out what actually happend on monday.
