as URW are now the default for courier ,times and Helvetica. This looks like fontconfig can do all te pattern matching you talked about. I have taken some part of your thread to the discusion: gsfonts take over the system http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=155169 I found your analysis interesting smtt copy and pasted it. Deing quite new to font managment i hope you could take part of this. There are not this much font guru in debian to weak correctly in depth.
