Package: qemu
Version: 0.8.2-4etch1
This is my first time reporting a Debian bug, so please don't all flame me at
once :-)
I can throw some more light on the Qemu/NT problem. In my case I've got NT4W
patched to SP6a, if it uses the NT VGA driver (limited to 16 colours at
600x800) cursors etc. work OK while if it uses the NT Cirrus driver most
cursors are displayed as movable white filled squares and some desktop and/or
application icons are displayed as black filled outlines with the background
showing through where expected (i.e. the icons have a shape, they aren't
square). With the Cirrus driver this depends in some way on the selected
colour/resolution combination.
The problem appears to be caused by the number of colours used to encode the
pointer (or, presumably, icon). This presumably explains why it's not an issue
with all client OSes- it's reasonable to assume that newer versions of Windows
have more colourful furniture :-)
Specifically, if I install MS animated icons for NT with the standard pointer
icon handled by rainbow.ani it is visible when colours are flowing through it
but not in the steady state. Investigating using NT's aniedit.exe shows that
the first frame of the animation is 2 colours while the remainder are 16
colours, editing the first frame to be 16 colours (i.e. all frames are now the
same format) results in a cursor which is correctly rendered.
Whilst editing accessible icons is a partial solution it's not totally
satisfactory since any 2-colour cursors embedded in applications or
development tools still show as white boxes. The same obviously applies to
desktop/application icons although I've not investigated these to determine
the combination that causes the problem.
