The problem with this proposal is that it doesn't do what you expect if more than one file is passed as an argument to zless. The current approach causes zless to behave as much like simple less as possible, with the obvious tradeoff that it doesn't work well in a pipe. Since it's so easy to explicitly specify a pipe if that's what you really want in your application's configuration or scripting, I'm not going to change this.
