Title: X server Crash

Package: Debian
Version: 3 Release 4

Hi :
I downloaded Debian 3 Release 4. I am trying to install it on IBM ThinkPad T42 with 1GB memory, with ATI Radion 9600 video card (64 MB).

1. On booting from 1/7 CD, I was not sure , what mode I should choose for installing. I did the default "linux" one.
It installed the kernel 2.2.20 although the most recent version of linux kernel is 2.6. Is it OK?
There were other options like bf24,idepci etc… Should I choose one of these options instead of default one.
Did I downloaded relatively old version of Debian?

2. On booting, my X Server is not starting.
    Contents of /var/log/XFree86.0.log :
This is pre-release version of XFree86 and is not supported any way.
      …
     XFree86 Verssion 4.1.0.1
     Release date : Dec 21/2001
     Build Operating System : Linux 2.6.9-ac6 i686
     …….

(WW) ATI : PCI/AGP Mach64 in slot 1:0:0 could not be detected
(EE) No devices detected
Fatal Server Error :
No screens found

Comments : it looks very old version od XFree86, but why surprisingly it is compiled on a relative current kernel 2.6.9, but debian came with 2.2 kernel. Is there any incompatibility?

3. cannot use my USB flash drive :
Mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb  …….
Gives : kernel does not recognise /dev/sda1 as a block device..

What it implies that there is no support for scsi devices in the debian kernel? I sit true?

What do you suggest :
1. Use current CD's, but try this time different option to install it if other options have relatively new linux kernel
2. Loook/suggest any site, whre can I download debian which will give me relatively new linux kernel and compatible XFree86?

3. Try to download relative new version of XFree86 rpm. I am afraid this may not work as my kernel is 2.2 instead of 2.6.

Any suggestion ?
Thank you.
