Hi, the cause for your problem is that the archive has not been written by cpio but most likely by GNU cpio.
It seems that this archive ignores the fact that the official cpio program, see: http://src.opensolaris.org/source/xref/onnv/onnv-gate/usr/src/cmd/cpio/ always writes lower case letters for hex numbers. I added a workaround and released a new version of star: ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/star/alpha/ Please keep in mind that it is pure luck to report a bug to a Debian packet if the Debian maintainer did not update anything during the past 2 years. Better report it to the project itself.
