If you could send the output of /usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg-core/script 3>&1 and from xdpyinfo both when the fonts are 'working' and when they aren't, it might help tracking down the issue. /Sune -- I cannot forward from the URL over the pointer to a LCD mouse, how does it work?
