I did little more than just "apt-get upgrade".

After it failed I tried "dpkg-reconfigure flashplugin-nonfree", which
also failed.

If this cannot be reproduced I don't know what's the problem (other than
flashplugin-nonfree keeping just one md5sum). A newly-downloaded file
does work, and the two files do have different md5sums:

   $md5sum install_flash_player_9_linux*
   76b38231a68995935185aa42dfda9db7
install_flash_player_9_linux-20070109.tar.gz
   821cc72359a937caef85bb4cc74ef5cd install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz

I guess I'll just have to remember that "md5sum mismatch" means "your
file is outdated"; I just thought this should be a little bit more
explicit.
