I get this "problem" sometimes too. I usually have to blame myself and my fuzzy typing. On French keymaps such as the one mentioned, you get | by typing AltGr+-. If you leave your finger for too long on the AltGr modifier, then the next key is not Space but AltGr+Space, which seems to be a different character that bash doesn't interpret as whitespace.
