I've installed jedit, which exhibits the same behaviour. So I guess the
bug should be moved to the sun-java5-jre package or similar? Personally
I don't care enough about non-free software to debug this issue any
further.

After realizing this, the first thing I tried was running freemind using
the other virtual machines satisfying the package dependencies. However,
I could not use freemind with any other vm. That's a different bug
though.
