I played with plugins yesterday, I got surprised to see many plugins are
disabled by default, I don't think it was the case with compiz 0.2,
that's sad. Anyway you should just need the rotate plugin to get this to
work. The keys are configured in
/apps/compiz/plugins/rotate/allscreens/options/rotate_left_key and right.

Ahhh...*that* works.

Much better. :-)

The switcher now works properly too (allowing me to switch to other areas of my extended desktop by using the workspace switcher), as does rotating the cube using the mouse.

It's a bit less convenient, though. I can't have a window that remains on my desktop all the time no matter where on my "virtual window" I happen to be. I always have to switch back to its section in order to use it. Most annoying. :-(

So I have to sacrifice some of the benefits of the GNOME desktop no matter what: either I sacrifice proper operation of the switcher and the window list when using them with multiple desktops, or I have to limit myself to a single desktop and sacrifice the ability to have a particular window always visible on the desktop. :-(
