Package: emacs22-el
Version: 22.1+1-1
Severity: wishlist

The .el files are in a separate package, so they don't need to be
compressed. Having them as .el.gz is inconvenient, because a wide
range of standard tools don't work transparently with compressed
files. The one I'm thinking of is diff: I sometimes make locally
modified copies of installed files, and trying to reconcile what I've
done is now much more tedious: I have to make an uncompressed copy of
each file I want to diff. Finally, the simple fact that the filenames
are no longer ".el" but ".el.gz" causes me lost seconds owing to
typing errors, as it violates the principle of least surprise.
