So, indeed, the bug belong to the X server, not really to the installer. I'm not an X expert, especially on powerpc. So, I reassign this to xserver-xorg. You might want to send the machine's xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log to this bug so that X maintainers can help you. You can get them by : - when the screen is black, hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login at the console - if that doesn't work, boot as single user, then temporarily remove the /etc/rc2.d/S??gdm link so that X doesn't try to start at bootup.
