This is a long standing bug/misfeature in XMMS: "Can't read/edit id3v2 tags in file info dialog." http://bugs.xmms.org/show_bug.cgi?id=335
It would be nice to at least have a workaround. Maybe a warning that you can only change the id3v1 tag.
