Actually, I've noticed that update-notifier is very tied to GNOME's /usr/bin/software-properties application (run from System -> Admin >Software origins > Updates), which can be configured to check for updates and its configuration is used by /etc/cron.daily/apt
However, for the benefit of KDE users (which don't have that) update-notifier should not claim to do those updates (which process does them anyway?) by himself. The bug still stands, but maybe the patch can be improved by pointing users to /etc/cron.daily/apt Regards Javier
