manpages-es is behaving incorrectly; this is already reported as bug #395503, so I'm reassigning and merging. Manual pages under /usr/share/man/es/ should be ISO-8859-1; there are many pages in other packages with that encoding, so this cannot be arbitrarily changed. When UTF-8 support is in place (as it should be as of the next upstream release of man-db), it will be possible to install UTF-8 manual pages under /usr/share/man/es.UTF-8/. That is my transition plan, but it is *not in effect yet* and *will not work right now*. Arbitrarily changing the encoding of the legacy directories from their historical meaning is not a sensible transition plan. > In my opinion, the best solution is 1), because the current trend is to > make everything UTF-8. The problem here is precisely that the change to UTF-8 wasn't coordinated with the man-db maintainer (actually, I assume it was accidental). If it had been, I could have advised that the transition plan wasn't far enough along yet for this to be possible. When it is in place, rest assured that I will communicate it very clearly to translators and developers. There's no need for the source files to be changed and thereby inconvenience translators; it should be perfectly adequate to recode the files with iconv as part of the package build process. The manpages-es maintainer has not responded to previous mails on this issue, so I hereby announce my intention to NMU shortly.
