Hello!

After submitting this bug I checked the versions of the dovecot
packages. The machine was upgrading from Debian Sarge to Etch. After a
full dist-upgrade including rewriting/adapting the config files it has
the following packages installed:

dovecot install (0.99.14-1sarge0)
dovecot-common install (1.0.rc15-2etch1)
dovecot-imapd install (1.0.rc15-2etch1)
dovecot-pop3d install (1.0.rc15-2etch1)

I fail to understand why aptitude shows 0.99.14-1sarge0 for the dovecot
package. All upgrades and security fixes were applied. There is no
pinning of packages in place.

I already has a short mail discussion with Fabio Tranchitella about the
version of dovecot in Etch. The original 1.0.rc15 needs some upgrades.
I fixed a similar behaviour of dovecot after an upgrade to Etch by
removing the package and installing dovecot 1.0.0 from source. The same
mailboxes that caused the errors stopped producing the "Can't open
INBOX" error and everything worked fine.

The current dovecot package contains real showstoppers for upgrades from
Sarge to Etch.

Let me know if you need any config files or other information.

Best wishes,
René.
