I did the following as suggested and it didn't help: rm -Rf /var/lib/menu-xdg/* plus dpkg-reconfigure menu-xdg.
It seems as if there must be some local configuration file that is messed up instead of system wide since 2 different logins show different menu options from the debian menu. One login only shows games, help, and screen. Another login only shows help and screen.
