Tatsuya, thank you again for all your help.  I would have been in
considerable difficulty without your help.

The original problem occurred when upgrading xemacs21 21.4.20-1.1 ->
21.4.20-2, not when migrating from -nomule to -mule.

In short, after the upgrade, bbdb disappeared from xemacs.  After
that, neither new installations of emacs21-mule nor emacs21 work
properly with Gnus even without any user start-up files until
corrupted data was removed from the ~/.newsrc.eld file.
