I too think this would be a useful feature, including the creation of a dummy package to track the dependencies. There is another feature that would be useful, namely the ability to get the build-depends for a particular version of a package.
With apt-get one must have the package installed, and it uses the dependency information of that package, I believe. It is odd that one must have the package installed before building it! Furthermore, if one has the testing version installed but wants to build a newer version, the dependencies may be wrong. Thus the suggestion. In the ncurses interface a natural way to implement this would be to have a command/kestroke that one could invoke when a particular version of a package was selected, analagous to the way one can pick a particular (binary) version to install.
