It appears that gtk-update-icon-cache now errors if there is a png file placed directly in /usr/share/icons/hicolor, this is a regression from the version currently in testing.

steps to reproduce:

apt-get install pidgin-data libgtk2.0-bin hicolor-icon-theme
cp /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/pidgin.png /usr/share/icons/hicolor/pidgin.png
gtk-update-icon-cache -f /usr/share/icons/hicolor
