I'd just like to point out (before someone reads too much into it), that
simply originally the full name of MPlayer was
"MPlayer - The Movie Player for Linux" (there really was not much
competition back then AFAIK and also made sense because MPlayer is not really
a unique name...) and much later the "for Linux" was dropped since it seemed
rather confusing.
So what you seem to consider the main meaning of this IMO was more accidental,
though if the votes/awards are worth anything that interpretation has
its justification as well.
