Just for reference, on my Athlon-XP 2400+ gnuchess with "Player Strength" set 
to max makes the move in about 1 minute, while with "Player Strength" set 
to the minimum it takes 1 second. 

Have you tried with different "Player Strength" settings?

When gnuchess/sjeng is "thinking", is the stopwatch in the lower part of the
interface going?

Could you send me a copy of ~/.kde/share/config/knightsrc, so I can compare it
with mine?
