By the way, I *think* my card is supported (ThinkPad T40p).

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:514]$ lspci |grep FireGL
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R250 [Mobility
FireGL 9000] (rev 02)

Would the output I saw reflect an incompatibility? I'm also seeing the
following in my Xorg.0.log, after putting `Driver "fglrx"' in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf, but I don't know if that's because my card is not
supported or whether the kernel module isn't loaded.

(II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Version Identifier:8.40.4
(II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Release Identifier: UNSUPPORTED-8.402

(II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Build Date: Jul 31 2007 22:20:14
  (EE) No devices detected.

Thanks for any info you can provide.
