This is correct for thousands of alsa users since ages ;) Could you
please do the following:
Boot your machine without starting kde. Switch to a console like
<CTRL> <ALT> <F2> login as user and do
$ alsamixer
Is the sound muted then?
I remember a similar bug. alsamixer worked fine and kmix has had its
own config, though......
