Hi Adrian, I'm quite sure this bug has been fixed in the 1.0.x releases. We (as the Dovecot maintainers) haven't enough resources to backport these fixes to the etch version of the package.
As suggested in other bug reports, using the backported package from www.backports.org is probably a better option: we are updating it to keep it in sync with the package in testing and it is far more stable and bug free than rc15. It'd be helpful if you could confirm me that the backported package fixes your issue, so I can close the report.
