  This is not true in Debian. As far as I'm aware, GNU classpath
currently does not have Swing, and that is precisely why the icedtea
project was created.

  Why do binary (.so) libraries depend on the libraries on which they
depend ? That you don't need to change the dependencies of the programs
they depend on whenever the library changes dependencies. There goes the
same for Java libraries.

  Imagine you have a java library depending on another java library.
This latter *must* be listed as a dependency, as programs using the
former won't run without it.

  As swing is *required* to use libhiglayout, and that for the time
being, only sun's java provides Swing in Debian, there you go.

  I'll add the dependency on icedtea, since it will make both your work
and mine easier.
