It turns out to be a bug in gtk2-engines-smooth indeed. This should be a duplicate of #304898 and #305167. The new gtk2-engines-smooth package has a wrong dependency on libatk 1.9 so I can't test it yet. I'll reassign and close this bug when I confirm the new gtk2-engines-smooth fixes my problem.
