There is no where near enough information here for me to be sure what is
going on. What do you expect to happen? What do you see when you run
apt? What is your config? I can't see why inserting anything into
/etc/hosts should make a difference to apt-cacher.

However,  I am aware of an issue with apt-cacher up to 1.5.5 not always
validating files with the upstream server (take a look at bug #369433)
This is fixed in the new version 1.6.0 which is about to be uploaded.
You can also get it from www.hindley.org.uk/~mark/debian

So, please either try the new version and see how you get on, or provide
more detail.
