I totally forgot about the libkvixmms.so plugin I had loaded in KVirc, seems like that it was interacting with xmms in a unwanted way causing the strange behaviour. So I guess it`s very probably not an XMMS bug, sorry for the inconvenience and thanks to Christopher Martin giving a hint to the problem :-)
