How? It looks like you can do but the init script does not.

Have you recompiled the kernel? Have you disabled automatic module
loading somehow? What is in the file /proc/sys/kernel/modprobe ?

It does not even try to. It checks whether it can load the module
itself.

Yes, and? You are cheating and this is the result, I wonder why you
expected something different.

Run "bash -x /etc/init.d/sl-modem-daemon restrat" - that output would
really help.
