The person who submitted the current checks said that it wasn't up to snuff, didn't check all the same things, and didn't appear to be that actively maintained, so with those reasons plus not having an additional package dependency, we went this route. However, I'm happy to let someone else figure this out. If someone can do an analysis and it looks like desktop-file-validate is much better, we can certainly switch. If, however, it reintroduces all the false positives that we've now adjusted for by not exactly following the standard (since people aren't following the standard), that's a bad idea.
