When MPD is actually running, this is normal. It seems that you actually have an ALSA problem here. I'm adding an additional note to the readme about standard practices for allowing both the mpd user and your account to access the sound card simultaneously under ALSA. Regardless, though, if MPD cannot open an output it should not crash. Can you send results of running it under strace? -- things change.
