I seem to be able to reproduce the two cases in different build environments, but haven't yet worked out what's happening. Since the same source is used, it seems that either there's a bug in the compiler/linker/etc., or something is insufficiently specified at build time. I uploaded updated versions of several packages today (including matchbox-window-manager 0.9.4-1, matchbox-desktop 0.9.1-2, and matchbox-panel 0.9.1-1). It would be helpful if you could say whether those fix the problem for you or not.
