I was pointed to gcc-4.3 in experimental which was a much simpler download and which, upon testing, showed the problem. Turns out to be one of the pieces of old code that I knew I needed to review but which is part of a much wider problem. For now, commented out this (unused) section of code. gcc-4.3 from experimental now builds quicklist without problems.
